THE Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe has inaugurated the Imeobi palace library, Onitsha.

The project, which was initiated and equipped by the Chairman of Onitsha North LGA, Patrick Agha Mba, is located within the serene environment of the Ime Obi to serve as a digital and physical facility for learning and research.

Inaugurating the project on Wednesday, Igwe Achebe said that the library could not have come timely as it would serve to preserve the rich history of Ndi Onitsha and provide an alternative learning environment for students and the youths.

He expressed gratitude to Agha Mba and to all those who donated books to the library.

Agha Mba thanked Igwe Achebe for donating a space within his palace to accommodate the library.

He said that he was moved to initiate the project to encourage the youths of Onitsha and Anambra State at large, to embrace education and learning.

“It will provide conducive environment for students to study as schools remain closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic,’’ he said.

Agha Mba said that the project was inspired by the vision of the Gov. Willie Obiano to make Anambra state the leading state in education in the country.

According to him, our state and indeed, Onitsha North LGA, has been achieving great results in education.

“Our golden girls of Regina Pacis Secondary School, here in Onitsha, defeated schools from more advanced countries to win the Technovation Challenge in the U.S.

The chairman said that Anambra students had been performing brilliantly in National and International examinations.

“This is why I took the initiative to support Gov. Obiano’s vision in sustaining the state’s excellent academic records by providing suitable and convenient learning and research centres like the Ime Obi (Palace) library,’’ he added.

The Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof Kate Omenugha, lauded Agha Mba for providing and equipping a library for students and youths living in Onitsha.

Prof Omenugha, who was represented by Ambrose Ikwunyely, also thanked Igwe Achebe for supporting the Obiano administration and the Local Government in promoting educational excellence.

She called on students, youths and Ndi Anambra to avail themselves of the opportunity of learning and research, presented by the library.

The commissioner also donated books to the library. The library was also equipped with computers for e-learning and online research.
