THE dancing step may be new to many Nigerians, but the display by Kelechi Iheanacho, Super Eagles striker, has shown that one corner dancing step is in vogue. Iheanacho in a video that was shot at the Le Méridien Hotel in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where the Super Eagles were camped ahead of the game against Zambia, was seen jumping on furniture at the corner of the room to demonstrate the new dance step to the amusement of his teammates.

One corner dance is the new popular dance step in town. It is a dance where two individuals come together to dance in a sexual way, or where a person dances in a position of having sex in a corner, or with an object or with a partner.

The dance originated from Ghana. It is made popular by Patapaa, an unknown street artist, who released a song entitled “One Corner,” and danced to it in a sexual explicit manner.

Since then, One Corner has livened up the streets of Ghana, while the accompanying risqué dance step is blowing up in the country’s social media space.

The “One Corner” dance craze has a street origin, it is essentially an aggressive pelvic thrust performed while holding on to either the floor, a pole or any supporting object – many have been seen taking more daring positions underneath cars, on top of walls, on gutters etc.

“One Corner” has received endorsements from local celebrities including Shatta Wale, a dancehall star, who only has good words for the movement. And Patapaa has been pictured with Bola Ray, a popular Ghanaian broadcaster, who shared a photograph of them all together.

But the popular song has generated controversy. Recently a 19-year old lady died in the Central Region of Ghana when a wall collapsed on her as she attempted to dance by the wall.

That notwithstanding, the ‘one corner’ dance is catching on fast among Nigerian youths. Reekado Banks, a Nigerian artist in Mavin singers group, recently posted a video of himself showing off his ‘one corner’ steps in the studio.

But not everyone is in love with ‘one corner.’ In fact, Eme Victor, a student of Linguistic at the Abia State University, said the ‘one corner’ dance should not be danced by decent persons. Besides, Victor said: “Some people will see you as a useless person whenever you are dancing one corner because it does not add anything meaningful or value to your life. It makes you look stupid and useless.”

Similarly, Clinton Nkwocha, also a student, described the ‘one corner’ dance as senseless. “The moment you see people jumping into the gutter, or holding various objects to engage in the dance, you begin to wonder if something is wrong with them. Please the dance should not be encouraged at all. It makes one look stupid,” he said.

Some persons also feared that one corner dance could lead to raping, sexual harassment and, even, death as can be seen in the case of the 19-year old lady recently died in the Central Region of Ghana after a wall she attempted to dance on collapsed on her.

That notwithstanding, ‘one corner’ virus appears to be catching on real fast.

So, if you see a person dancing in the gutter, facing the poll or wall dancing, make no mistake, the person is not mad, he or she is only following the one corner dance trend.
