Online Publishers Visit NAN MD

THE Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, has expressed its desire to collaborate with the News Agency of Nigerian, NAN, to engender a mutually beneficial relationship. Dotun Oladipo, secretary general of GOCOP stated this when it led a delegation of its members to pay a courtesy  visit to Ima Niboro, managing director of NAN and former spokesman of  President Goodluck Jonathan.  Oladipo who briefed Niboro on the aims and objectives of GOCOP also talked about the guild’s efforts to sanitise online publishing by making sure that its members stick to the ethics and tenets of journalism.

Responding, Niboro commended GOCOP for its efforts to sanitise online publishing in the country and stressed the need for journalists to report issues objectively in the national interest. He promised that NAN would remain objective in its reports, even though it is a government agency.

The managing director also seized the opportunity to tell the delegation what he has been doing to change the fortunes of NAN and improve its revenue base since he assumed office 10 months ago. He has not only renovated NAN’s New York Office in the United States, but also embarked on a similar upgrading of the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. “By the time I am through with this project, we’ll have a befitting working environment and will be in a position to host anybody from anywhere in the world.”

Niboro also spoke passionately of efforts being made by NAN to move with the times by digitalising its operations to enable it reduce operational cost, improve efficiency, and make subscription fees more affordable to subscribers. “We are targeting millions of subscribers. Already, you can subscribe to daily NAN news through SMS. By the time we finish repackaging, people would be free to subscribe for only the news they need. You can even subscribe for a day and pay online for a day,” he said.

Niboro plans to broaden the agencies revenue base which informed the introduction of NAN Bulletin, an all-gloss monthly magazine edited by industry veteran, Obiora Chukwumba, a deputy director at NAN. A fully commercial venture, NAN Bulletin sells for N500 a copy and competes for advertisements with private publications.  Its third edition is presently on sale.
