PRESIDENTIAL Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has broken his silence on the travail of embattled former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice.

The Ekweremadus were on Thursday remanded after appearing before a UK court on charges of bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting.

The police had said the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

“[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting,” the police said in a statement.

Reacting, in a tweet on Friday, Obi said “My family and I are with the Ekweremadu’s over their travail. We join all men of goodwill in praying for the healing of their daughter and commit them into God’s hand for justice to be done”

Ekweremadu was recently in the news for saying the South-East region would not vote for Obi, in the 2023 elections.
