Paris 2024: NWF commends Oborududu in spite failing to secure Olympics final slot

THE Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), on Monday has commended Blessing Oborududu in spite falling in the semi-final match against Meerim Zhumanazarova .

This is contained in a statement signed by the Media Assistant of the federation Promise Okotoko, on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of the Nigeria (NAN) Oborududu fell 1-3 to Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan in the semifinals of the women’s 68kg wrestling.

The president of the federation, Igali Daniel lauded the resilience and dogged disposition of  Oborududu, who also won a silver medal at the last Olympics in Tokyo.

“She will definitely do well in her last encounter on Tuesday which is the  third place match to win a bronze,” Igali said

Oborududu still has a chance to win medal in her last game on Tuesday.

Zhumanazarova world number 16 and Olympic bronze medalist overcame Oborududu to book a gold match against U.S.Amit Elor.

Oborududu who is currently ranked sixth in the world,  came from 2-0 down to beat Canadian Morais Linda 8-2 in the round of 16.

She followed that up with a 6-2 quarter final win over her France opponent Koumba Larroque.

The NWFW described the performance as a manifestation to her drive, passion, and personal commitment to her nation.

It also expressed sadness over the result, stressing the odds Oborududu defied to be in Paris.

However,  Oborududu will have a chance to clinch a bronze on Tuesday when she battles in the bronze bout.

NWF appealed  to Nigerians to put the wrestlers in their prayers as more athletes hope to make the country proud.(NAN)
