–

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has extended his heartfelt commiserations to the Itsekiri people of Delta State on the passage of Ogiame Atuwatse II, the Olu of Warri, their monarch, whose transition was formally announced at the weekend.

Buhari, in a statement signed by Femi Adesina, special to the president on media and publicity, conveyed his personal condolences to the immediate family and relations as well as friends and associates of the respected monarch, saying he would “greatly missed by the Itsekiris, the people of Delta State and all Nigerians.”

He said that as three-month mourning period for the royal father started, the president urged members of the monarch’s family and all Itsekiris to be comforted by the knowledge that the late Olu would always “be remembered as a peace-loving monarch who did his best to foster the harmonious co-existence of his people with other ethnic groups in Delta State and Nigeria.”

Buhari similarly expressed the belief the late royal father would also be honoured by present and future generations as a most worthy custodian of the rich cultural heritage of the Itsekiris people. He also commended his wisdom, sagacity and benevolence which, he said, the late Olu exhibited in his 28-year-old reign over the Itsekiri nation.

The president prayed that God Almighty should receive his soul and grant him eternal rest.
