Police arraign 18-year-old student for allegedly assaulting teacher, security personnel

The police in Osun, on Tuesday, arraigned one Salami Lateef, 18, before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun for allegedly assaulting his teacher and security personnel.

The Prosecutor, ASP Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 1, at Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendant conspired with others, now at large, to cause serious assault and malicious damage.

He added that the defendant threw stones and pebbles, and broke glasses of the windows of the school building during a protest.

The prosecutor further explained that the defendant assaulted one Cpl. Aderibigbe Emmanuel by beating him up and stoning him when he was performing his legal duty, as a member of the Nigerian Legion’s security outfit, in the school.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of conspiracy and malicious damage.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Nicholas Babatunde, pleaded with the court to grand the defendant in the most liberal term, pledging that his client would not jump bail, but would produce reliable sureties.

Magistrate A. A. Adebayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Adebayo said that sureties must swear to affidavits of means, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, produce three-year tax clearance certificates and three recent passport photographs each.

The case was adjourned till March 18, for hearing. (NAN)
