Police arraign 33-yr-old for alleged N.9m ATM fraud

THE police in Osun on Monday arraigned a 33-year-old man, Hamzat Bashir, in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged N900,000 ATM fraud.

Bashir is facing a two-count charge of fraud and theft to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Adeoye Kayode, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in June at an ATM of an undisclosed bank within Osogbo metropolis.

Kayode said the defendant, with intent to defraud, offered to assist one Kamarudeen Imam in withdrawing the sum of N600,000 using the complainant’s ATM.

“He also stole the sum of N300,000 from the complainant before he was tracked and arrested and later brought to the court after thorough investigation,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offences committed contravened Sections 419 and 383 punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mrs Bose Dada, prayed the court to grant her client bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mr E.I. Omisade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in like sum.

Omisade said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present evidence of tax payment and two passport photographs attached to an affidavit of means.

The case was adjourned till July 15 for hearing.
