SEN. Abiodun Alujimi on Wednesday in Abuja called for participation of more women
in politics to address challenges bedevilling women toward nation building.
Alujimi made the call during a two-day conference organised by Women International Networking (WIN), in partnership with Human Resource Working Partners (HURWORPS) Nigeria held in Abuja.
According to her, the involvement of more women in politics, appointive and representative positions would provide platform for women to speak out, as well as contribute toward national development.
She, therefore, stressed the need to support women in every sphere, as well as ensure they participate in decision making and leadership positions in the country.
The Founder and President of WIN Conference, Kristin Envig, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the conference that the gathering would provide an opportunity for women around the world to connect and strategise toward developing themselves.
Envig added that participants at the conference would learn more about networking business, leadership, inclusion and innovation to facilitate better understanding.
She said women would also be inspired by the stories and experiences shared, which would accelerate their commitment toward addressing the challenges of inadequate access to education and other social issues affecting women.
Mrs Charity Ohadiughs, the Executive Partner, WIN Conference, said “the conference seeks to empower more women, give them self esteem, confidence and opportunity to interact with other people around the globe.”
Ohadiughs added that participants would also be able to network and get international links, as well as educate them on appropriate channels to access loans for their empowerment.
She said “women have been encouraged to form cooperative societies to enable them to access loans.
“Sometimes, it is not that the government has not given enough opportunities, but it is about the women not knowing about the opportunities and some don’t make themselves available to benefit from such opportunities.’’
A participant, Mrs Georgina Onyeziligbo, who is the President, Ladies Knights of St. John’s International Nigeria, said the conference provided women with the opportunity to network and unite toward empowering and improving their skills.
Another participant, Mrs Ngozi Egwuekwe, an entrepreneur, said she participated actively in previous WIN conferences, which impacted tremendously in her business.
She said “I have learnt to speak out without fear or intimidation because my confidence has been built, which motivated me to even share with other women on ways to improve and develop ourselves.’’ (NAN)
