SEGUN Adeleye, publisher of WorldStage News Online, has unveiled a foundation, Segun Adeleye Foundation for Good Leadership in Africa, SAFFGLIA, to encourage good leadership and governance across Africa. Adeleye in Lagos, on Thursday, March 10, said the foundation was to encourage African leaders to embrace good governance in order to uplift the standard of living of the people among others.

In his opening remarks at the unveiling ceremony cum lecture, Adeleye said the foundation would carry out activities and projects that would draw attention to activities of governments from local to national levels and compel them to do things in the best interest of the people. He pointed out how bad leadership had held Africa hostage for years by preventing her younger generations from attaining their full potential. He promised that the foundation would engage in leadership training programmes that would champion the spirit of development of societies in Nigeria and Africa as well as promote research.

“As you hear this message, the idea is for Africa to recognise her identity, essence and proudly bring her values and aspirations to the table as contribution to international relations. Africa needs its voice and identity to focus and realise its entire God given potentials. The glory of Africa has been covered for centuries with generation after generation being born into mental slavery. If we don’t do anything now, of course, the world will not come to an end, but our children will continue to be slaves to their counterparts in other lands,” he said.

Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, who delivered a lecture on the topic, “Setting Agenda for Good Leadership in Africa,” at the event, described the birth of SAFFGLIA as the beginning of a new dawn for good leadership in Nigeria. Mohammed, who was represented by Joe Bankole, director, Lagos Operations, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, said the present administration is a representation of the values that the foundation stands for, adding that the government is proud to associate with the foundation.

The minister identified corruption as the biggest challenge facing African development. He noted that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was committed to fighting the menace in order to secure the future of the unborn generations in the country. “Leadership is about integrity and accountability and Nigerians has voted for President Buhari to change the face of leadership in Nigeria and transform the nation for the benefit of all. Nigerians really need to give him time to enjoy the promised change,” he said.

The event which attracted prominent Nigerians and media practitioners was chaired by Wale Babalakin, chairman of Bi-Courtney, who was represented by Molara Wood, head corporate communication, Resort International Limited, witnessed the launching of a book entitled: So Long Too Long Nigeria, written by Adeleye.

While reviewing the book, Gabriel Akinadewo managing director, Freedom Online, cited the relevance Adeleye’s articles written seven to eight years ago on infrastructural decadence, corruption, government policies, unemployment among others, to present situations in the country. While recommending the book to those in authorities, government and corporate organisations, he noted that, “The fact that majority of issues captured in the book which are testimonies of present realities in the country today shows that Nigeria has not changed over the years.”
