Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Nasarawa State chapter, has restated its commitment to partner Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to tackle insecurity in the state.

Aminu Maifata, state ALGON Chairman, made the disclosure on Sunday in Lafia at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Action Aid Nigeria (AAN) and Global Peace Development (GPD).

The ALGON chairman who is also the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), was represented by Abubakar Lamino, Secretary of Lafia LGA.

According to him, the partnership becomes imperative due to the rising cases of rape and other Gender-Based Violence (GBV) involving minors.

Maifata said the increasing rate of crime and vices in the state needed a collective effort to curb the menace; hence their resolve to collaborate with NGOs and other groups.

He explained that the council would set up Local Conflict Management Alliance (LOCMA) in all communities in Lafia toward the smooth implementation of the Community Action and Response Team (CART) already established by the two NGOs.

“We are going to make sure that we implement the CART already established in two communities in Lafia by you in all our communities to help in addressing the increasing cases of rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and other forms of crimes being committed.

“I call on all not to relent but to continue in assisting the security agencies in fishing out the perpetrators of these evil acts committed in our communities” he said.

In his remark, Mr Ebruke Esike, Executive Director of Global Peace Development, commended the council and other stakeholders for their efforts so far.

He said the steps taken by the stakeholders would help in addressing the devastating and inhumane acts of rape and other security challenges currently affecting the society.

Esike said as part of measures to check cases of kidnapping, communal crisis, rape and other criminal activities, there was need to focus on programmes aimed at fostering mutual trust between security agencies and the communities.

He added that the NGOs had established CART in some communities in the state to foster mutual trust between the public and security agencies so that the people would volunteer information based on trust.

“We are currently working in 12 communities in Nasarawa State including Lafia toward creating such trust,” he said.

Mr Aliyu Adamu, Project Officer of Action Aid Nigeria, said that the stakeholders at the meeting had developed an action plan that would help in strengthening collective fight against crime at the community level.

He called on parents to be more careful with the kind of persons they leave their children with, especially now that the rate of defilement was increasing.

Adamu said that the structures set up by the NGOs in collaboration with ALGON would help to facilitate coordination between security agencies and the public to respond to emergencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by traditional rulers, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), community and religious leaders as well as the media. (NAN)
