THE Anambra State House of Assembly on Wednesday urged Gov. Willie Obiano to direct the state Ministry of Transportation and the state traffic management agency to enforce single-lane culture to ease traffic gridlock in the state.

The resolution followed a motion raised under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Mr Doughlas Egbuna (Onitsha North I), who lamented the activities of motorists and tricycle operator who drive against the traffic and drive recklessly.

Egbuna said that a lot of man hour and economic time were lost due to traffic congestion caused by non-adherence to traffic rules.

“Fifty per cent of the problem will be solved if we can address the problem of impatience and if our traffic officials can enforce single-lane culture on our roads,” Egbuna said.

Also, Mr Obinna Emeneka (Anambra East), said that the gridlock being experienced in the state was as a result of influx of people into the state.

“Before now, traffic gridlock was not an issue in our state but because the state is safe and developing fast, many people are relocating to reside or do business here.

“Which means that as our population is increasing, the number of vehicles on our roads is increasing too, and traffic is inevitable.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Transportation, the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency and other relevant agencies should scale up their efforts to sanitise our roads,” he said.

However, Mr Lawrence Ezeudu, a resident of Awka, said that impatience on the part of motorists, especially tricycle operators, was one big factor responsible for the gridlock in the state.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Uche Okafor, said that many accidents were caused because road users refused to imbibe patience and single-lane culture, advising road users to be patient and obey traffic laws.(NAN)
