Anambra inaugurates agency to access World Bank $380 million fund

THE Anambra State Government is to access the 380 million dollar provided by the World Bank for 27 states participating in Community and Social Development Projects.

This followed the inauguration of a 12-member World Bank’s Community Social Development Agency by government.

Performing the ceremony at Governor’s Lodge Amawbia, Governor Willie Obiano urged the agency to employ global standards in utilising the fund to enhance rural transformation across the state.

Members of the agency are drawn from the traditional institutions, civil society groups, youth and women bodies and experts in the field.

The inauguration of the agency is the final criteria for accessing the fund.

Anambra had already contributed its annual counterpart fund of N50m as well as recruited staff to ensure project implementation.

The project is assisted by the World Bank and co-financed by federal and state government with an aim of confronting challenges of poverty through success stories of past community development driven interventions.

Inaugurating the agency, Obiano expressed happiness that the state had met all requirements for accessing the fund.

Obiano said the programme would promote the realisation of the community choose your project initiative embarked upon by the government.

He enjoined the agency to ensure that projects embarked on were in line with World Bank standards.

Earlier, Mark Okoye, Anambra commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, commended the governor for granting approval for the state to key into the programme.

Roland Odegbo, the chairman of the Agency and Traditional Ruler of Nteje, expressed gratitude to the governor for appointing them to serve the state.
