The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State, CSCEO, accuses Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State of masterminding police brutality against students of the state institutions who demonstrated in support of their striking lecturers
THE Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State, CSCEO, has strongly condemned the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and security agents for the attack of students of the state during their peaceful demonstration on Monday, October 12. The students had embarked of a peaceful demonstration in support of the industrial action embarked upon by their institutions’ lecturers over non-payment of salaries.
The CSCEO said the attack on the protesting students was against the law of the land in violation of Section 39,40 and 41 of the amended 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Besides, the group said that Aregbesola violated the section 18 of the amended 1999 constitution, which directs government policy to be tailored towards equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels, “promotion of science and technology,
eradicate illiteracy and compulsory and free universal primary education, secondary education, university education and free adult literacy programme.”
The CSCEO, in a statement signed by Comrade Adeniyi and Alimi Sulaiman, its chairman and secretary, described the attack on the students as “barbaric, ungodly, undemocratic, illegal, unconstitutional and uncivilised act that capable of returning Osun State to the despotic dark days of military government where lives were brutish and shortish.”
The group thus called on Nigerians, particularly, the people of Osun State at home and in diaspora to call Aregbesola to order to stop the sort of brigandage going on in the state.
Adeniyi charged: “Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola and his co-travellers have committed the series of criminality offences ranging from attempted murder, threat to lives and property, and misappropriation of public funds which contrary to the section 316,383,407,408, and 409 of the criminal code/act Cap C: 38 of 2010 & laws of the federation (2004) and criminally violated Section 15,16 and 17 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Sulaiman, therefore, called for the unconditional immediate release of the arrested students by the security agents and apologise to them in the interest of equity, fairness and justice. He also told the state government to take the responsibility of the health care bill of the injured students.
