NIGERIAN Americans living in all parts of United States have been urged to exercise their civic responsibility by going out to vote in the ongoing 2016 general elections in the US. The call was contained in a statement issued by James Fadel, president of the Board of Trustees of Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN. Fadel enjoined all Nigerian-Americans that are eligible to vote to either take advantage of the early voting in their states of residence, or wait until Tuesday, November 8, the general election day to cast their votes for candidates of their choice in the ballots. According to him, “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. He urged everyone in our community to take seriously their obligations as citizens, starting with exercising the right to vote. Nigerian-Americans must be more engaged, not less.

“As Christians especially, God, through the liberty won for us in Christ Jesus, has left the shaping of our government into our hands. When you exercise your duty to vote in state and national elections, you affect how government functions and how it reacts to important issues affecting our lives. When we exercise our political freedom to vote, we are showing our love to our neighbours as demanded. When we vote, we affect how the laws of our nation are formulated and enforced. Laws affect the overall good of society. Although good laws don’t make people good, they do affect the good of the people,” the statement said.

CANAN is the umbrella body of all Nigerian-American Christians in the United States with membership drawn from both orthodox and Pentecostal churches across the USA. There are an estimated 500,000 Nigerian-Americans living in the State of Texas alone. Other States with high concentration of Nigerian-Americans include New York, Georgia and Maryland.
