The ongoing crisis in the National Conscience Party, NCP, is deepening. Some national leaders of the party have thus, petitioned the National Executive Committee, NEC, on some of the anomalies taking place and asked for an urgent intervention.

In the petition signed by Goodluck Obi, the national deputy chairman, South-East, and Peters Omoragbon, the national deputy chairman, South-South, the leaders demanded among other things that Tanko Yunusa, the national chairman of the party, should step aside from his position ahead of the NEC meeting of the party slated for Abuja.

“We demand that, Mallam (Dr.) TankoYunusa step aside as the Chairman of the party during the NEC meeting and duration of the entire proceedings of the Primaries because he is also an aspirant for fairness, justice and equity. Article 4.4.2 (e), of the Party Constitution is relevant in this circumstance,” the petition said.

The leaders also requested the highest decision making organs in the party to investigate allegations of financial impropriety reported against a state executive committee in which members of the National Working Committee, NWC.

“An investigation by NEC in session into the allegation of financial impropriety levied by a Presidential Aspirant (from the South-South) against one of the state executive committee with the full knowledge of both the National Chairman and General Secretary, which has just been formally brought to the attention of the national deputy chairman, South-South,” the petitioners said.

Omoragbon similarly asked the party’s NEC to review the exorbitant nomination fee for aspirants into elective positions without the approval of the highest decision making organ of the party.

He also accused the national chairman and secretary while the financial secretary of the party was denied access to the financial statement of the party.

“It is also our request that, NEC look into the role(s) of some NEC members in misleading Presidential Aspirants from the South-South into commencing their Presidential bids from the South-West and even sponsoring the South-West Zonal Council meeting and making financial demands from the aspirants to the detriment of their Zone of origin.

“NEC should as a matter of URGENCY look into and curtail the excessive abuse of power and position by both the National Chairman and General Secretary by holding states and zones that have refused to pander to their whims and caprices to ransom.

“This is done by withholding official recognition and refusing to submit the list of duly elected ‘candidates’ from the South-East Zone to INEC because of the powers vested on both officials by the electoral acts.

“And in so doing would subvert the general wills of the people of the South -East states to stooges that does not represent the interest of the zones other than that of the national chairman and general secretary,” the petitioners demanded.

It could be recalled that the presidential candidate of the party in 2015, Marin Onovo, who recently defected from the party said his decision to leave the party was based on the crisis in the party which remained unaddressed for sometimes.
