WOMEN Friendly Initiative (WFI), a non-governmental organisation, has called on the electorate, especially the youths not to engage in any violent act before, during and after Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Mrs Rosemary Adaji, the Programme Officer of the group, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gwagwalada on Wednesday.

She urged the electorate to view the rescheduled general elections as a means of enhancing the nation’s democracy and socio-economic development.

“Our politicians should eschew hate speeches, which are usually disseminated through the social media.

“Winning elections should not be a desperate task for our politicians; but a means to enhance development in the country.

“We call on all eligible voters especially the youths, to promote violence-free elections.

“They should also come out en masse on election days and vote for credible leaders of their choice,’’ she said.

She advised the electorate and contestants to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, while considering the interests of the country during and after the elections.

Adaji also called on the youths not to allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians to foment trouble or perpetrate electoral malpractice during the elections.

“The security agencies and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be firm and fair; they should not  be attached to any candidate or political party,’’ she said. (NAN)
