The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has said perpetrating violence during elections is an economic investment for the impoverished.

Kukah, speaking at an ongoing one-day peace conference by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, tagged ‘Peaceful Elections and National Development,’ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, noted that there was a reason why electoral violence was not commonly recorded in high-class neighbourhoods like Ikoyi, Lagos or Mariana, Abuja.

According to the cleric, such politically motivated aggression is a confluence of poverty and opportunity.

He said, “Perpetrating electoral violence is an investment for the poor. If you succeed, you can go home with a television.”
