The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has launched ‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ targeted at ensuring crash-free road travels by Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

As part of measures to achieve its goal, the Corps stated that it had set up 30 road camps along 36 critical road corridors, including clinics, and emergency rescue ambulances.

Speaking at a strategy session with 12 Zonal Commanders on the end of year special patrol in Abuja on Tuesday, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed that the agency would collaborate with other security agencies during the operation.

“Already, a total of 201 mobile courts have been put on notice to sit throughout the operation period, December 15, 2018-January 15, 2019. In addition, motorists who commit life threatening offenses will be referred for psychological evaluation,” he added.

Oyeyemi, therefore, called on road users to comply with traffic regulations, noting that 75 per cent of traffic crashes resulted from human errors.

He admonished road users to commit to road safety and not see compliance with traffic regulations as punitive or a waste of time.

The Corps Marshal reminded the Commanding Officers about the roles of the FRSC in the 2019 elections, noting that as ‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ winds down in January, the corps would be preparing for the February polls.

He said, “Accordingly, Commanding Officers are to take inventory of all Corps logistics and communications facilities so as to ascertain their working order and anyone requiring attention will be duly attended to preparatory to the elections.”

The FRSC boss enumerated the achievements of the Corps in 2018, including its appointment as a member of the Advisory Board of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund as representative of Africa.

Oyeyemi encouraged the FRSC officials to remain focused on the mandate of the agency and “continue to beam the light for others to follow even beyond the shores of Nigeria.” – Punch
