THE Child Protection and Women Empowerment Initiative (CPWEI) an NGO, has charged the Nigeria Police to be civil, nonpartisan and fair to all political parties during the general elections.

CPWEI coordinator in Yobe, Hajiya Maryam Gambo, gave the charge in Damaturu on Thursday, when she visited the Commissioner of Police in the state Abdulmaliki Sunmonu.

“We are here today because the Nigeria Police is responsible for safeguarding lives and property in the country.

“We believe that election violence can be averted or reduced to the barest minimum, if the police is at its best in securing everyone involved in the exercise.’’

Gambo, however, expressed sadness at how some youths were making themselves willing tools in the hands of some politicians to perpetrate violence.

“Over the years, the sponsors of electoral violence have used the youths to perpetrate violence and disrupt the election process.

“During such violence, voters are threatened, intimidated, wounded or even killed in the course of exercising their constitutional rights.

“Today, we therefore come out as youths, to say no to election violence and firmly resolve to shun violence in the forthcoming general elections,’’ Gambo said.

Asst. Commissioner of Police Ihueze Nicodemus, who received the group on behalf of Sunmonu, expressed delight at the group’s visit and the work it was doing to discourage violence during polls.

Nicodemus pledged the force’s commitment to ensuring adequate security and peace during the elections. (NAN)
