THE Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba has called on the three tiers of government and communities to mobilise and collaborate among themselves to tackle human trafficking and other anti-human activities.

The Order, an association in the Catholic Church, made the call at a pro-life rally titled: “The Family and Sanctity of Human Life”, at SS Mulumba and David Catholic Church, Surulere, Lagos, on Friday.

The Metropolitan Grand Knight of the order in Lagos, Mr Adeniyi Williams, and his deputy, Mr Charles Mbelede, jointly addressed a news conference after the rally.

Williams appealed to  the Federal Government to develop a national action plan that would make it easy for groups and individuals to monitor all anti-human trafficking activities in the country.

“Nigeria is a transit and destination country for women and children subjected to trafficking in persons including forced labour and prostitution.

“Trafficked women and children are recruited from rural areas for involuntary domestic servitude and sexual exploitation.

“Human trafficking is everyone’s problem. Therefore, everyone must join in proffering solutions to the menace,’’ he said.

He criticised the increasing rate of abortions, and pointed out that “life is sacred and must not be toiled with”.

According to him, most abortions are unsafe and are performed by unskilled caregivers.

He expressed regrets that Nigeria had one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world, noting that nothing had been done to change the trend.

Mr Charles Mbelede, the Deputy Supreme Knight, suggested that governments and parents should give more attention to the education of youths, particularly, the girl-child.

“Uneducated young Nigerians are the most vulnerable group to human trafficking, there should be free education for the girl-child,” Mbelede said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rally was to draw the attention of the  government and the public to the sacredness of human life.

It was also to bring into public glare such anti-life activities such as: abortion, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, child abuse, homosexuality, gay marriage, kidnapping and terrorism. (NAN)
