A Kano-based Lawyer, Aisha Karaye, has called on government to find lasting solution to hate speech by providing quality education for youths to curb the menace.

The legal practitioner made the call on Monday at a One-day Sensitisation Workshop Organised by Civil Society Forum and Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), to address hate speech.

Karaye said that many youths who used hate speech on social media did that without knowing its implication.

She “no educated person will deliberately instigate or castigate others for one reason or the other or even allows himself or herself to be used to hurt someone by using hate speech.”

The Executive Director, Women and Youths for Justice and Peace Initiative, Dr Jummai Alhamdulillah, described the rate at which hate speech on radio stations and the social media increased was alarming.

She said that the workshop was targeted at enlightening stakeholders on the dangers of political hate speech and modalities for curtailing them.

Alhamdu appealed to women and youths to shun political hate speech and embrace the attitude of loving one another, irrespective of ethnic or religious differences.

In his paper, Malam Hamza Ibrahim of CITAD said available statistics revealed that political hate speech was on the increase, especially on social media.

He called on youths and stakeholders, in finding solution the problem, to expedite action in bringing an end to the menace.
