INEC distributes sensitive election materials to LGAs in Kwara

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kwara, on Wednesday distributed all sensitive election materials to all the 16 local government areas ahead of Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the distribution of the materials took place at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Ilorin on Wednesday.

NAN also reports that the materials were taken to the local governments under heavily armed security personnel.

The distribution was supervised by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Garba Attahiru-Madami in the presence of representatives of representatives of political parties and Security agencies like the DSS, Customs, Immigration, Civil Defence, Police, Nigerian Army as well as journalists and international observers.

Speaking with journalists during the distribution, the REC said that INEC was ready for the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state on Saturday.

He expressed optimism that the materials would arrived the local governments later in the day with about 10 armed security personnel in each of the local government.

“By Friday night, the sensitive materials would be distributed to all the 193 Registration Area Centres (RACs), while early on Saturday, they will be taken to the polling units before 7a.m,” the REC added.

He, therefore, appealed to the people of Kwara to remain calm and come out en masse on Saturday to vote for candidates of their choice.

Attahiru-Madami commended the people of the state for coming out en masse during the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

He also commended the electorate for conducting themselves peacefully during the last elections that made the process peaceful and orderly.

The REC, however, called on the people of the state to replicate what they did on Feb. 23 on Saturday by being orderly, peaceful and vote for candidates of their choice.

He said the card readers’ performance during the Presidential elections was 97.8 per cent according to the printout of performance from the headquarters.

According to the REC, to ensure the success of Saturday’s election, he held series of meetings with his staff, security agencies to review the security situation and map out strategy for hitch free elections.

He said the all the ad hoc would be retrained on Friday in all the 193 Registration Area Centres in the state in preparation for Saturday’s election.

Attahiru-Madami said there would be spare card reader for every five polling units to guide against malfunctioning card readers. (NAN)
