THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, spent a total of N36,240,000 on transportation for the February 16 presidential and National Assembly elections in Adamawa State before the elections were postponed till Saturday.

According to the figure obtained by our correspondent from the state secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Yola, the state capital, a total of 1,812 buses owned by members of the union were hired by the commission.

The buses were hired to transport election materials to 21 local government areas of the state.

Each of the bus owners were said to have been paid N20,000 for the service.

The chairman of the state council of the NURTW, Bello Adamu, disclosed these in an interview with our correspondent.

He explained that based on INEC’s demand, the union mobilised the buses and the price was agreed based on the contract that the NURTW had with the commission at the national level.

According to Adamu, all the bus owners had been paid by INEC for the job done for the botched election.

He said, “The union employed the bus drivers for INEC based on their request.

“We mobilised 1,812 buses for INEC to transport the materials to all the council areas.

“The buses were booked for one day to transport the election materials. The drivers were paid for one day.

“There is no problem with payment for the job they did. Each of the drivers got N20,000 for the service.”

Adamu said INEC would have to pay the same amount for each of the days that the rescheduled elections would be held. – Punch
