THE South East Governors’ Forum has resolved to set up a common security committee to tackle security challenges in the region. It also resolved to set up a centre for southeast integrated security monitoring/intelligence gathering, to be centrally located in Enugu.

The forum in a communiqué at the end of its meeting held on Sunday, July 28, at the Government House, Enugu, reiterated its earlier stance that there is no land in South East for RUGA settlement programme. It pointed out that the security committee will also address the safety of fuel pipeline route to Enugu Depot to ensure the resumption of pumping of petroleum products to the Enugu depot in the shortest possible time.

It also agreed to key into the federal government’s community policing programme. “We will establish forest guards in each state and roads cleared up to 50 meters into the bush to have a clear view of roads ahead,” it said.

On the state of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, the forum lamented the deplorable condition of the facility particularly, the runway. It commended Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for his numerous interventions at the airport.

They appealed to the federal government to consider their previous requests and reconstruct the runway for the sake of safety. “Forum while calling on the federal government to take more meaningful action on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, Enugu-Port Harcourt Road, Okigwe-Owerri Road and Owerri-Umuahia Road, at the same time, we commend the federal government for the steady progress on the second Niger Bridge project.

“The Forum noted that Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states have abundant oil and gas reserves which have not been fully explored. The forum therefore, calls on the federal government to show more commitment and commence intensive exploration and development of oil and gas resources in these states of the South East.”

The meeting was attended by Governors Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and the deputy governors of Anambra and Imo states respectively.
