DANIEL Onwe, President, Association of Lawyers with Disability in Nigeria (ALDIN) on Saturday in Lagos urged government at all levels to evolve proactive measures  to curb building collapse.

Onwe made the call while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in reaction to Wednesday’s building collapse at the Ita Faaji area of Lagos.

He said it had become crucial for government to evolve effective housing policies that would safeguard the use of residential premises.

The lawyer called on the Lagos government and relevant stakeholders to take deliberate steps towards preventing similar incidents in the future.

“The recent building collapse in Lagos, the injuries and loss of lives of both adults and school children is very sad and unfortunate.

“It is important for relevant authorities to take proactive measures to prevent such disasters from happening in the future,” he said.

Onwe urged property developers in the state to obey laws governing the erection of structures in the interest safety.

“House owners and builders must not gamble with the lives of the people, they should refrain from erecting houses that do not follow laws governing construction.

“We agree that more residential houses are needed, people should avoid occupying uncompleted buildings,” he said.

Onwe urged the state government to support those affected by the collapse and called for investigation into the cause of the incident.

“Our position is that those found guilty of any wrongdoing in the collapse should be made to face the law,” he said. (NAN)
