DON Unachukwu, chairman, Idemili South Local Government Area, LGA, has described Ebelechkuwu Obiano, wife of the Anambra State governor, as “Mother Theresa of our time”.

Unachukwu made the observation when Obiano visited Idemili South LG headquarters at Ojoto while on tour of the 21 LGs.

Obiano used the opportunity provided by the tour to empower the less privileged people in the various communities, donating relief materials to them.

In an address, Unachukwu said that Obiano’s empowerment projects benefited the widows, the unemployed and the mentally challenged.

Other beneficiaries include people living with disabilities and the orphans.

The chairman noted that her gestures had given hope to the hopeless, stating, “she is a gift to Ndi Anambra and an `angel’ sent by God to dispense charity.

“She remembered the widows and the disabled, facilitated the training of many unemployed in skills’ acquisition as well as support them with take-off grants.

“I make bold to say this: she is a modern day Mother Theresa, who has been supporting her husband and putting smiles on his face with all her positive accomplishments.’’

According to him, a man with a smile on his face is stable and carry on his responsibilities efficiently,

Meanwhile, Chinyere Unachukwu, wife of the LG chairman, also eulogised Obiano because of her positive contributions to society through her pet project, CAFÉ.

This ranged from skills acquisition centres to building homes for many widows in Anambra.

“It gladdens our hearts to be associated with your empowerment projects in the state. You are a woman with a golden heart, who identifies with the less privileged in the society.

“We have noted with delight your passion and dedication to the welfare of the hungry, naked, unsheltered, sick and hopeless. You have given hope to the down-trodden,’’ Unachukwu noted.

While presenting relief materials to the women, Obiano urged them to be self-reliant and not to depend on their husbands’ income for survival.

“Women should be part of bread winning in our homes. Don’t let your husband die of stress-related ailments before their time. Register for free in the NGO and become self reliant,” Obiano said.

She, however, urged women to remain submissive to their husbands even after gaining financial freedom, saying that liberation from suffering did not mean liberation from husbands.

Obiano encouraged pregnant women to strive to attend antenatal and post natal care and immunisation.

“You should try to maintain the recognition already attained by Anambra State as placing first in immunisation campaign in the country.’’

The governor’s wife later handed cash presents, bags of rice, insecticide-treated nets, school bags, exercise books to the less privileged persons in the seven communities that make up Idemili South.
