THE Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) on Friday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the new minimum wage of N30,000 for Nigerian workers.

The Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of CDHR, Mr Alex Omotehinse, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that workers deserved more to live a more comfortable life.

Omotehinse said: “We commend the President but N30,000 is not even enough.

“Our demand is that an average worker should earn minimum wage of N100,000. What’s N30,000 considering costs of transportation, accommodation and others.

“We should not celebrate the N30,000 because of what the political office holders cart away. What’s the minimum wage of political office holders?

“If the government really meant well for Nigerian workers, let them increase the minimum wage to at least N100,000. Do you know how much it cost to rent a flat in cities like Lagos. N30,000 is a meagre amount.”

The rights activist urged the government to cut done all wastes and the huge salaries and allowances of public office holders and give workers a more befitting welfare.

The President on Thursday signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019 into law; by this act, the new minimum wage is now N30,000.

The assent mandates all employers of labour across the country to pay workers a minimum of N30,000 monthly wage. (NAN)
