THE Nsukka Local Government chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Tuesday elected new executive committee (EXCO) to pilot the affairs of the union for the next four years.
Speaking at the inauguration of the officers, Mr Kenneth Ugwueze, the President of the Enugu state chapter of the union, commended the peaceful atmosphere that characterised the exercise.
Ugwueze, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Udoagha Ani, also expressed delight over the prevailing industrial harmony  in the council.
He said: “I’m happy for the love and unity that exist among workers in Nsukka Local Government council.
“In some local governments, elections are usually characterised by fighting, rancour and bitterness but the case is different here.
“What you have done today is commendable and should be emulated by all local governments in the country.”
The NULGE president urged the new executive not to betray the confidence reposed in them by the workers but take their election as a challenge to do more for the workers.
“What the Nsukka council workers have done today by returning all the former exco members unopposed should be a challenge that should spur you to do more for them and the council.
”The state NULGE is committed to the welfare of council workers in the state,” he said.
The officers who were returned unopposed for a second term include Mr George Ngwu, Chairman; Mrs Lebechi Omeje (Vice-Chairman); Mr Paul Attama (Secretary); Calista Nwamu (Treasurer) and Festus Ugwu (Auditor).
In his acceptance speech, Ngwu thanked the workers for their trust in them and promised that they would not disappoint them.
“I am humbled and overwhelmed by the level of trust and confidence, which our colleagues in this council have in us since 2015 when this caretaker committee came on board.
“Whatever achievement we might have recorded was as a result of your unalloyed cooperation and support, without which we could not have done anything,” he said.
He commended the council Chairman, Chief Patrick Omeje, for always ensuring the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and allowances and urged him to keep it up.
“Our union will continue to work in synergy with the chairman in order to move the local government to the next level,” the chairman said.
Ngwu also expressed appreciation to the state NULGE president for always giving priority attention to issues concerning Nsukka council workers.
In his remarks, the council chairman lauded the peaceful conduct of the election which, he said, was a testimony to the cordial relationship between workers and council management.
“We are very happy with the cordial relationship among the management, the union and the workers and I pray that it should be sustained,” he said.
Omeje, represented by his deputy, Mr Cosmos Agbo, said the council would continue to do its best to ensure that workers’ salaries and allowances were paid as and when due.
