FORMER Governor of Abia State and senator-elect Dr Orji Uzor Kalu says that he has dropped his desire to vie for the position of Senate President in the yet-to-be-inaugurated 9th National Assembly.

Kalu, who is the senator-elect for Abia North, said he would now be contesting for the position of Deputy Senate President.

Kalu, who spoke to aviation reporters early Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos on his way to Belgium, said he decided to opt for the Deputy Senate President position given the decision of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone the Senate Presidency to the North East.

“The party is supreme; I am a very loyal party man. I believe I have worked very hard for the APC more than any other person, and I won’t go against my party decision,” he said.

“However, I will campaign vigorously and market myself for the position of Deputy Senate President,” he added.

Kalu urged the APC to be fair in its zoning arragement for principal officers in the National Assembly even as he demanded that the South East should in no way be short changed or marginalised.

Kalu, however, said should the party fail to allow the South East naturally take the position of the Deputy Senate Presidency when the new Senate is inaugurated by May, he will be left with no choice than go against the party’s decision by openly seeking for the position of Senate President.
