Frank Anthony Igboka, president-general, Nimo Community, said he initiated a brand of ‘social security scheme’ to order to augment the living conditions of the elderly in Nimo.

The scheme covers the elderly from 80 years and above in Nimo, a community in Njikoka Local Government Area. “With the initiative, I have been able to place some of the elderly in the community on the scheme, where I facilitate payment of monthly stipends to them,” Igboka said in an interview.

He described the elderly as `sculptures’ that require a lot of care, stressing that this commendable course would help to uplift their livelihoods.

“I decided to put the social security on ground to help them to have a sense of recognition,’’ Igboka said.

The PG said that he started the payment with N5, 000. “I intend to increase the payment subsequently.’’

He added that the scheme was non discriminatory as it involved even those on regular pensions as former civil servants and those who never worked in any service at all.

He explained that initial take off fund was raised through voluntary contributions by some Nimo indigenes in The Diaspora as well as some philanthropists.

According to Igboka the scheme offers free Medicare covering provision of drugs, crutches, wheelchairs for the physically challenged and those unable to move around without being aided.

He emphasised that he has incorporated Nimo people in The Diaspora in order to help to cushion the sustainability of the scheme.

Igboka re-assured that the scheme would be a long term venture for which, “I wish to be remembered.’’

He added that octogenarians by the virtue of the scheme had been exonerated from “payment of dues that Nimo community levy from time to time.’’

Catherine Ugah, 81, from Uruokofia Village, Nimo a benefactor, commended the PG for the laudable initiative and urged him not to relent.

Obiora Ofordile, 83, another benefactor, from Abba Village, Nimo thanked the PG for his benevolence and for giving the elderly a sense of belonging.
