PHOTOGRAPHS are needed to reshape national realities for development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Resident Representative of the UNDP, Mr Mohamed Yahya, who was represented by the Head of Communications, Lucky Musonda, said this on Monday at the Abuja International Photography Festival.

The festival is one of the largest annual gatherings of photographers in Africa. The 2019 edition is tagged “Engaging realities’’.
Yahya, while commending the work of the festival organisers, said that photography helped to bring the realities of the nation to the fore.

He said, “We are happy to be partners with Art for Humanity, the organisers of the 2019 Abuja International Photo Festival.

“It is our hope that people will not only get inspired by your images and stories from local communities.

“Also, the effort in making this happen will be testimony that the simplest of actions, no matter who takes them or where they live, can make a real difference.

“It can assist the attempt at halting or mitigating the destruction of our natural world and addressing poverty and hunger,” he said.

NAN reports that the event was formally opened by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Isu Gekpe, who commended the initiative.

She urged photographers to continue to raise the significance of the profession in Nigeria and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the growth of the sector.

Gekpe encouraged youths to use photography as a platform for employment and economic empowerment. (NAN)
