VANDALS have destroyed 100 electricity transformers belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) in the last two months, according to Dr. Elijah Friday, JEDC’s communications director.

Friday told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jos that the rate of vandalism in Plateau was “getting worse everyday”.

“The vandals have destroyed too many transformers; they are making it difficult for us to cope,” he said.

The official explained that services had been truncated and revenue lost to the massive destruction, and advised customers to protect the transformers.

“`The customers and communities must be alert. They must protect these facilities because they bear the consequences of these evil deeds,” he said.

Friday also decried the rising rate of energy theft by consumers that had continued to by-pass prepaid meters, regretting that JEDC could not collect up to N1 billion for the N4.5 billion worth of energy it distributed in February.

He advised people by-passing meters to to desist from that attitude because anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.

“Whistle blowers and surveillance teams are on the watch. Anyone caught will be prosecuted. We have made some arrests and will soon arraign the suspects,” he said.

On epileptic power supply in Jos metropolis, the official disclosed that there had been a decline in the amount of electricity transmitted to JEDC.

“We do not generate power; we only distribute what is transmitted to us. We are entitled to five per cent of ‎electricity generated in the country. That is what is given to us and that is what we distribute.”(NAN)
