THE Commissioner of Police in charge of elections duty in Edo, Mr DanMallam Mohammed, has assured newsmen of adequate security and access to polling units during the re-scheduled general elections.

Mohammed gave the assurance on Wednesday in Benin while addressing newsmen shortly before the joint military exercise code named “Show of Force”.

He said the media had important roles to play in disseminating information and coverage of the electoral process.

The commissioner explained that the tasks of security agents were to provide adequate security coverage, adding that the command had taken necessary measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

He also said that there had been daily review of security measures by the joint security agencies in the State and expressed satisfaction with the process.

Mohammed said that the “Show of Force” exercise was to give confidence to members of the public to come out on Saturday and exercise their constitutional rights without any fear of intimidation.

He added that security agencies would be neutral in the discharge of their duties during the elections.

He however warned political thugs to keep away from the State as the command would not tolerate any act capable of truncating the peace in the state.

Mohammed gave assurance that the command would ensure the protection of lives and the sensitive materials to the designated areas.

Similarly, the Brigade Commander, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Greg Omorogbe, assured that his men at the various LGAs would join forces with other security agencies to beef up security at the locations of the materials.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the show of force took the combined men of security agencies in the state round major roads and streets in Benin metropolis.

NAN further reports that the Nigerian Army, Immigration Service, DSS, NSCDC, Air Force, FRSC and the Prison Service participated in the exercise. (NAN)
