The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), an NGO, has advised Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in Kogi and Bayelsa States to ensure that their security is guaranteed before going out to cast their votes on Nov. 16.
Mr David Anyaele, the Executive Director of the centre, gave the advice while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said it was important for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to collaborate with relevant security agencies to ensure their safety to and from the polling stations.
“We all know that assess to rehabilitation services in this country is very poor.
“So if the security situation is not conducive, please do not go out to vote because only the living can vote in the next election,” he said.
The executive director, while delivering a summary report on the assessment of provisions for PLWDs in INEC preparation for the forthcoming elections, recommended that PLWDs cast their votes within their vicinity.
“Provision should be made for more accessible polling stations and polling booths, especially for people using wheel-chairs.
“Arrangement should also be made for PLWDs to vote at the nearest polling places to their residence, regardless of their place of registration.
“INEC should also ensure that election materials are available in accessible formats that is, braille, large prints, tactile formats, audio-visual formats for PLWDs.
“There should be provision for sign language interpreters and other specialists to assist PWDs during elections,” he said. (NAN)
