RESIDENTS of Jalingo have called for peace as the curfew imposed on the town due to post-election violence enters the fifth day on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Angwan NTA, Angwan Kassa, Nya Bukaka,  Water Board and Main Market areas of the state capital, which were worst affected by the violence, have been deserted with the few people still in the area living in fear in spite of  the curfew.

Some residents, who spoke with NAN commended the state government for imposing the 6 am to 4 pm curfew.

Malam Yakubu Yusuf, a resident of water board area, one of the troubled spots,  said that although the curfew had caused a lot of inconveniences to the people, it was necessary to prevent further destruction of lives and property in the town.

Yusuf called on the people of the state to eschew violence and to live harmoniously with one another for the development of the state.

Rev. Yakubu Nagombe of Nya Bukaka area of Jalingo, who sustained injury during the violence, appealed to other victims of the crisis to forgive one another for peace to reign.

Nagombe, who commended Gov. Darius Ishaku for imposing the curfew and treating the injured, called on traditional and religious leaders in the affected areas to support the governor’s efforts by calling their people to order.

Malam Ali Bala of Angwan NTA, spoke of the need to strengthen security to ensure the safety of lives  in the area.

According to Bala, the gunshots often heard at night have compelled residents to live in fear.

Mr Bala Dan Abu, the Senior Special Assistant to  the governor on Media and Publicity, said the state government was doing its best possible to restore peace in the town.

Dan Abu described as unfortunate, the accusation by a  defeated governorship candidate  that the governor’s supporters were fomenting trouble in the state.

“How can someone win election and his supporters will turn around to foment trouble? The governor’s supporters were celebrating the victory when they were attacked by the opposition,” he said.

He added that the crisis in the aforementioned areas, which claimed the lives of six persons with many others sustaining various degrees of injury, should be condemned by all well-meaning individuals.

Dan Abu disowned an unnamed governor’s aide that was presented to newsmen on Monday by the Department of State Services for being in possession of 350 Permanent Voter Cards.

The media aide said that the said person was not an aide to the state governor. (NAN)
