Ike Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president says the Senate will forfeit its current its recess once President Muhammadu Buhari is ready with the ministerial list

IKE Ekweremadu, deputy Senate president, has said that the upper chamber of the National Assembly would reconvene from its recess once it receives signal that President Muhammadu Buhari is ready with his ministerial list. Ekweremadu, who spoke in Enugu on Sunday, August 16, when the Enugu Zonal management of Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, paid him a courtesy visit, said the Senate would also suspend its break once there was a matter requiring their urgent attention.

He said: “Though we are on recess, most of us are very much around doing other legislative duties. Therefore, if the need arises, we will quickly reconvene to give Nigerians the service we were elected to offer; especially if the ministerial list is sent by the President.”

The lawmaker insisted that the Senate would at all times put the interest of Nigerians first. On the issue of pay cut of members of the National Assembly, Ekweremadu explained that they were prepared to make sacrifice in the interest of Nigerians and Nigeria.

He explained that what has happened was that the Senators did not consult their colleagues in the House of Representatives on the issue, stating that the National Assembly had already cut its budget from 150 billion to 120 billion and required inputs from other wings of the Assembly before a final decision will be taking on the issue.

On the issue of insurgency in the North-East, Ekweremadu argued that insurgency was a continental issue that all African leaders and countries must join forces and resources to fight aggressively. He stated that insurgency undermined the development of any nation and noted that the parliament had a big role to play in addressing the vice by setting up special tribunals that would deal with it.

“Insurgency is a different kind of crime and as such needs a different kind of approach,” he said, while calling for concerted efforts in the reduction of poverty, creation of employment and enhancing livelihood of every Nigerian, which he said would go a long way in helping to reduce insurgency and other associated vices.
