The Centre for Children’s Health Education, Orientation, and Protection (CEE-HOPE), has urged the Federal Government to ensure adequate enforcement of the Sexual Harassment Prohibition Bill passed into law on Tuesday.
The Executive Director of CEE-HOPE, Mrs Betty Abah, made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
Abah said that sexual harassment of all kinds were prevalent, even against children.
According to her, primary and secondary school pupils should be covered by the law.
“I commend the Senate for passing the bill, it is a good development. However, I hope that it would be enforced to its last letters,” she said.
She said that sexual harassment was also widespread in offices, adding that young and innocent women had been targets.
Abah called for the most stringent punishment for rapists of any kind.
She said that the punishment should be in addition to putting offenders’ names in the offenders’ register.
She added that rape should not be a bailable offence. According to Abah, the measures will serve as deterrents.
“There must be things in both the body language and raw actions, including review of existing laws and the enforcement thereof, to show our government’s anger against rapists.
“This is important when one considers the damage that they cause especially against children and even babies.
“We must be intentional in this case so that the world will not think that we are indulging rapists,” she said.
NAN reports that the Senate on Tuesday passed the Sexual Harassment Prohibition Bill to protect women and girls from sexual predators. (NAN)
