Statistical Association to partner Anambra on research methodology

Nigerian Statistical Association has promised to partner Anambra State government in tackling research methodology challenges, so as to evolve vibrant economic planning system.

Sidney Onyeagu, the president of the association, gave the promise during its 42nd Annual Conference of the association held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium, Awka.

The theme of the conference is: “Statistics For Economic Recovery, Growth And Sustainability.

Onyeagu described the theme as apt stressing that statistics could be applied to ensure efficient and effective economic planning system in the state.

“Anambra State can call on us whenever they are planning a summit.

“We can prepare the questionnaire for them, secure enumerators, carry out survey and interpret the data so generated,’’ he added.

Onyeagu said the association was planning to introduce statistics as a course of study in all secondary schools across the nation, so as to lay a good foundation for students to be attuned to rudiments of the course.

“My promise of making statistics a subject of study in secondary schools is on course, as most of text books for teaching and learning of statistics in secondary are now available.

“Our application to the National Council on Education is to be discussed very soon at its meeting, which will hold in Imo State later in the year.

“The 42nd edition was being hosted in Anambra after the association received massive support from Governor Willie Obiano to host the conference in the state.’’

In a speech during the opening, Joseph Ahaneku, the vice-chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, said without statistics, planning and budgeting in states and institutions could not be successfully achieved.

Represented by Charles Esimone, deputy vice-chancellor, Academics, the VC said that statistics should be considered seriously in every institutions or organisation because of its importance in all spheres of human endeavour.

He appealed to the association to help in elevating Nigeria’s economy so as to meet with the rest of the world.

The event also featured award of fellowship into the Nigerian statistical association to three outstanding members.
