As the race for Enugu North Senatorial seat hot up, it appears Chukwuka Utazi, commissioner for transport, is well positioned to pick the ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party

SINCE the declaration by Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State that the next governor of the state would come from Enugu north senatorial district, most politicians from the zone including Senator Ayogu Eze, are fighting over who becomes the next governor of the state come in 2015. But chukwuka utazi, commissioner for transport in the state, has his work cut out. He wants to replace Senator Eze at the senate.

He has overtly been making consultations to get critical stakeholders in the district to endorse his ambition while others are still considering their options.

It is widely believed that the incumbent, Senator Eze, might be going for the governorship position. The declaration has put Utazi in a vantage position to secure the senatorial ticket since he is the only candidate for the position in PDP. Utazi was once a member of the Old Enugu State House of Assembly.  He was not just there as an ordinary member; he was the deputy speaker at that time. Going to the Senate would be a big dream come true for Utazi who, on two occasions, had to step down his senatorial ambition on the advice of Governor Chime. He is also said to be enjoying the support of close associates of Governor Chime.

He is in the good books of Governor Chime who first appointed him as his special adviser. In that capacity, Utazi distinguished himself and was promoted to the position of commissioner for transport. It is believed he is Governor Chime’s choice for the Senate in the event that Eze goes for the governorship.  He is from the only federal constituency (Igbo-Eiti/Uzo-Uwani) that has never represented the Enugu North Senatorial District.

Governor Chime has been performing well since he assumed power about seven years ago and this could be the reason why some of his aides are gearing up for higher political offices because they believe that Governor Chime’s seven years of unparalleled achievements and all his success story would be in their advantage.
