GOV. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Thursday appointed 17 members to the State Community Policing Advisory Committee to ensure a successful implementation of Community Policing in the state.
Ugwuanyi inaugurated the Committee in Enugu and urged them to come up with a best community approach to build trust and mutual understanding with the people.
“My administration will continue to give priority to people’s welfare and security as cardinal of every government.
“This project is in line with the state security architecture manifested with the establishment of Forest Guards and Neighbourhood Watch.
“I, therefore, charge the committee to come out with the best strategy and grassroots collaboration to ensure the security of the people,” the governor said.
He expressed confidence in the committee members’ ability to deliver on their mandate.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr Celestine Okoye, said that some people failed to understand what community policing was all about.
Okoye, who represented the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Adamu, said the project had been in existence in the society and would not be controlled by the police.
” It is the community that owns this and we can only recommend their uniform and thank God it is today a success, ” he said.
AIG Danmalam Mohammed in charge of the new Zone 13 Police Command, said that the police would do its best to give the South-East the security it deserved.
” I am happy for another opportunity to serve South East Nigeria once again in a bigger capacity.
” Community Policing is nothing other than cooperation between the people of the community and the security agencies, ” Mohammed said.
Commissioner for Police (CP), Enugu State Command, Mr Ahmed Abdulrahaman, thanked President Mohammed Buhari for approving the project.
He appreciated the IGP and Ugwuanyi for the role they played in ensuring that the project becomes a reality.
Mr Lawrence Agubuzo, Chairman, Enugu Traditional Rulers Council, promised that the committee would work closely with the Police to ensure that its objective was achieved.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the committee is chaired Abdulrahaman with Agubuzo as the co-chairman.
Other members of the committee cuts across heads of security agencies and heads of civil society organisations.
