SENATOR Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone has decried the poor economic situation in Nigeria.

“The country is passing through difficult times. Job opportunities are very slim; corruption and decay of social structures are frightening; insecurity of lives and property is alarming,’’ Umeh lamented.

He said this during inauguration of the 2018 Awka Diocesan Laity Week at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ekwulobia.

The senator called on the lay faithful to hold their heads high in the midst of all difficulties as the ‘salt of the earth and light of the world’ and pray fervently to reverse the ugly situation.

In a homily by Paulinus Ezeokafor, a most reverend and the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, urged lay faithful to be ambassadors of Christ by living up to their faith and trusting in Divine Providence.

Ezeokafor added: “law breeds order in the society, especially when it is just.

“Out of the 10 commandments of God, only two are for God while the rest are for man.

“Do not interfere with God’s commandments to avert the wrath of God,’’ he said.

The Catholic prelate thanked the immediate Diocesan Laity Council executive for “their wonderful performance, smooth election and most especially, their cordiality with the new executive’.’

Michael Muonwe, the diocesan Laity Principal Chaplain, acknowledged the vital role of the laity in the growth of the church.

He advised those yet to acquire their voter’s card to do so immediately, so as to exercise their citizens’ responsibilities.

Joseph Igwebuike, the newly elected president, called on the lay faithful to participate actively in this year’s laity week that focuses on the theme: “Nigerian Laity, Deepening The Priestly, Kingly and Prophetic Roles.’’

He pleaded for financial support to enable the council to have functional secretariat and meet up with other challenges.
