THE Volunteer Community Mobilisers, VCMs, Onitsha North Local Government Area have been commended for mobilising pregnant women to access healthcare facilities.

The commendation was made by UNICEF Desk Officer in the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, Chineze George-Ileka, during the appraisal meeting with VCMs at Onitsha.

George-Ileka noted that the meeting helped to ascertain the progress made by the VCMs and the challenges they face while executing their duties at different health centres.

UNICEF desk officer urged VCMs not to be self-centred, while performing their jobs in order to save lives.

“It is important to educate pregnant women on the need to attend antenatal and postnatal checkups.

“You should not be rude to pregnant mothers to avoid scaring them away.

Giving them drugs routinely will help to draw their attention,’’ George- Ileka added.

She introduced new methods of charting form materials that would be used in recording the cases of pregnant and nursing mothers.

“I appreciate the efforts of the UNICEF in reducing high mortality rate in women in different community,’’ she said.

An HIV specialist from the Ministry of Health Awka, Afam Anaeme, commended the volunteers for rendering humanitarian services to pregnant women and children.

Anaeme enjoined the mobilisers to forward a list of their needs and challenges to President’s-General of their communities, urging nurses and caregivers to be active in discharging their duties.

He commended Onitsha North VCMs for making Onitsha North health centres to take first position in the state in the area of safe-delivery of pregnant mothers.

Anaeme added that the VCMs should always educate people to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, as it was dangerous disease.

However, leaders of the VCMs at different centres in the community listed challenges facing them that include, lack of potable water, scarcity of drugs and erratic electricity supply.
