Anambra State government has pledged its commitment toward eliminating wasteful spending through establishment of a transparent procurement process.

Nkem Okeke, Anambra State deputy governor, said this on behalf of the governor while speaking at the maiden Emeka Muoma Eze Annual Public Lecture of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Awka Branch.

The lecture has a theme: “A Case For Good Governance: The Role of The Procurement Process’’.

“The present administration has demonstrated commitment toward transparent procurement process through the institution of the Tender’s Board to eliminate waste, thereby achieving value for money and improve infrastructure in the state,’’ he said.

The governor said state transactions were subjected to open and rigorous process, which resulted to the economic worth of Anambra valued at 3.2 trillion and one of the largest economies in Nigeria.

“Anambra is so thorough and known for excellence in due process, transparency and accountability and rated the most transparent and accountable state in Nigeria in the year 2015.’’

Chris Okoye, a guest lecturer, who spoke on the theme, identified three drivers of good governance to include “Due Process, Outcome and Impactful Outcome’’.

He said that the linkage between good governance and sustainable development could not be over emphasised.

Okoye, an engineer, noted that public procurement process was key instrument for promoting good governance in any system.

He added that building institutions and good systems were imperative, as the absence of independent regulatory and inspectorate systems undermine all aspects of development.

Earlier, Edmund Nkalu, the State chairman, Nigeria Society of Engineers, noted that governance was about service delivery.

He emphasised that the lecture was in line with the vision of the NSA which centred on continuous education for their members and the public on matters that affect National infrastructure development.

The event which featured presentation of awards to the deputy governor and others, were attended by technocrats and stakeholders in engineering field in Anambra and beyond.
