That is the jigsaw the Senate is going to unravel as its look into the second attempt on the life of Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president, and his family, who were attacked in their residence this morning by unknown gunmen

For a second time in three years, Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy president of the Senate, escaped being killed as assailants stormed his residence in Abuja this morning, November 6, at about 4:00am. Ekweremadu, his wife and a son were in the residence when the assailants, who evaded the security men in his Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, gained entry into the house.

According to a statement issued by Uche Anichukwu, his Special Adviser on Media, “The attackers, who could not immediately shoot in order not to attract the attention of the security personnel on duty, took hold of his son and commanded him to lead them to the senator’s bedroom.” He said at this stage there was a struggle which led to the arrest of one of “the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape.”

The assailants, he said was handed over to the Police. Nevertheless, he said: “The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police.”

At the time of the attack, Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house.

The sinister attack on the senator has raised some concern that some persons probably want him dead.

Dino Melaye, a senator from Kogi State, in his tweeter account said he had spoken with Ekweremadu to sympathise with him on the attack. Melaye now concluded in his tweet: “We are in Perilous times but God will continue to be God.”

Ekweremadu’s colleagues in the Senate have mandated the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the alleged assassination attempt on him and members of his family.

Bukola Saraki, president of the Senate, who berated the Nigeria Police for their alleged late response to Ekweremadu’s emergency calls, asked the committee to follow up on the investigations by the police.

The deputy Senate president had similarly narrowly escaped an attempt on his life in Abuja on November 17, 2015. “Although the 2015 incident was reported to the security agencies, nothing has been heard about the matter till date,” Ekweremadu alleged.
