GOV. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, on Friday in Benin, inaugurated a seven-man visitation panel to look into how best the state-owned Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, could work better in the post-COVID-19 era.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inauguration of the panel, headed by Prof. Ikponwonsa Omoruyi, was performed by Obaseki at the Government House, Benin.
The governor said that his administration had put together ‘a very experienced and formidable team’ to come up with ideas on how the university could operate in a post COVID-19 era.
He said that the last visitation panel that looked into the activities of the university was constituted about 10 years ago.
“You will agree with me that the need for a visitation panel is long overdue.
“We believe that it is very pertinent at this point in time for us to take a very closer look at our university, given what is going on in the world now, as it affects university education.
“This is with a view to organising the university for the future. I will like you to help us look into some of the issues that have been going on between the council and the university management for a while now.
“We’ve also had quite a lot of correspondences within the university community in the last 12 months.
“This visitation panel, aside carrying out its normal functions, should also see if it can focus on those two issues I have mentioned.
“First, you should focus on how our university can operate in a post-COVID-19 world and how we can deal with both financial and public health issues we are now confronted with.
“Second, we believe there are some nagging issues, which we need an independent opinion on, so that we can quickly take necessary actions,” the governor said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the panel thanked the governor for the honour of entrusting him and his members with the job.
Omoruyi assured the governor the panel would do its best in discharging the duties, in line with the terms of reference given to it.
“We do hope that at the end of the day, the governor and the entire state will be happy with the results of the visitation panel,” he said.
