Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed renewed allegations of Russian state involvement in the poisoning of dissident Alexei Navalny on Thursday, saying such claims have been stirred up by sensationalising media outlets.

There have always been such sensationalised stories about Russia in the Western media. It is not surprising,” Putin told his annual news conference.

Navalny earlier this week said that he had been poisoned in August by a group of Russian national security officers, as evidenced by “too many coincidences” of their locations and his.

Navalny, who laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden have determined was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok, said an independent investigative team had been able to establish the officers’ whereabouts based on phone and airline passenger records. (dpa/NAN)
