THE Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Revd Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged Christians and Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of love and selflessness in this Easter season.

Martins in his Good Friday message released to newsmen on Wednesday, said that it was imperative for Nigerians to embrace love for one another, especially,  at this trying period.

He said since humanity was ransomed through the love and selfless sacrifice of Jesus Christ, there was the need for all to equally embrace the virtues of love and selflessness.

He also urged Nigerians to learn to live in peace and mutual tolerance with one another.

“There is so much bloodshed and suffering in our country today because of lack of love; lack of care and concern for the welfare of neighbours; lack of love for the sick and the defenceless.

“The wanton destruction of lives and property in some parts of the country is not the ideal.

“God wants us to turn a new leaf by learning from Him who gave His only begotten son as ransom for our sins.

“When we embrace this spirit of love and learn to tolerate one another irrespective of our religion, tribe or political affiliation, then this country will be a better one.

“So, I say to you; allow love to wash away all forms of hatred, greed, anger and envy from our midst so that this country can be great again.

“This is what God expects of us as a nation,’’ he said.

The archbishop also advised the country’s leaders to learn from the leadership style of Jesus who forsook all worldly comforts and pleasure, in order to liberate mankind from eternal damnation.

He urged the political class to show more empathy and humane in their approaches to issues. (NAN)
