Pope Francis has given former European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi a seat on a Vatican commission which advises the church on social, political and economic affairs.

Italy-born Draghi, who has had no public roles since he left the ECB last year, was made an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, a Vatican statement said Friday.

According to its website, the Academy is made up of academics appointed by the pope “on the basis of their competencies in the social sciences and of their moral integrity.”

It describes its mission as “promoting the study and progress of the social, economic, political and juridical sciences,” to help the Catholic Church develop its own social doctrine.

“The Academy also reflects on the application of that (Catholic Church social) doctrine in contemporary society,” the website said.

It currently has 22 ordinary members, including Draghi, U.S. Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz, and the director of Germany’s renowned Max Planck Institute, Christoph Engel. (dpa/NAN)
