THE Primate, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, has dedicated Lady Alice Chiebonam Ozumba Ultra-modern Maternity Complex at Iyienu Mission Hospital (IMH), Ogidi.
Dedicating the complex, Rev. Okoh urged the hospital staff members to discharge their duties with love and diligence.
He urged Christian leaders and the laity to see to it that enemies of the Church were not allowed to destroy it.
“I want to register our appreciation to Prof. Ozumba for being grateful to God. It is not every person that can be grateful to God because people are always looking for more.
“I also thank Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo and his wife Elsie for the vision they kept in running Iyienu Mission Hospital and inviting me for this dedication.
“Take heed to thyself as the Satan in us is 80 percent while 20 percent is from outside. If you overcome the 80 percent, you have won.
“Stop tribalism and nepotism, it is worse than Coronavirus.
“Stand firm against the enemies of the Church and false teachers. Some are wooing us to embrace gay marriage and transgender, if we embrace that evil, there will not be a need for maternities,’’ he said.
Rt. Rev. Nwokolo announced that outstanding hospital bills of some needy patients had been paid by some individuals and parishes to compliment the dedication and visit of the primate.
The Chairman, Hospital Management Board, Ikechukwu Ejelue, said that IMH was opened in 1890 by Bishop Ajayi Crowther and had its first maternity block in 1931.
“After 89 years, the dream to build an ultra-modern maternity complex became a reality after a donation of N10 million was received from Prof. Ozumba in memory of his late mother.
“Although this structure gulped not less than N45 million, we still solicit for funds to further ensure efficient functioning of the facility. We need to set up the O&G Theater Room, generator and solar panel inverter,’’ Ejelue said.
The immediate past Vice-Chancellor, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, after whose mother the complex was named requested the government to upgrade IMH to a Teaching Hospital.
Prof. Ozumba said that his joy in God and the fact that he was born at IMH moved him to assist in funding the project.
“Given the historical position and quality of secondary and tertiary healthcare services rendered at IMH, I call on the state and Federal Government to upgrade this hospital to a teaching hospital.’’
The Hospital Administrator, Rev. Tochukwu Okwuchukwu, said that IMH helped the Federal Ministry of Health in curbing maternal and child mortality by procuring standard facilities that ensure safe delivery.
